Red oak is generally the preferred oak species
by custom woodworkers, as well as by large industrial wood manufacturers.
It has a characteristic showy grain pattern, reddish color, and is somewhat
easier to machine and work than white oak.
Red oak is also a commercial work horse.
Past and present applications
include farm equipment, flooring, heavy timbers, pallets and railroad ties
because it is easily treated with preservatives.
