Tree Production
Christmas
trees are produced much like any other agricultural crop except a tree requires
several years to grow. Each year nurseries produce millions of evergreen
tree seedlings. For our farm, we purchase two or three year old seedlings
which are about 8 to 16 inches tall. These seedlings are planted in
rows and take about six years to become a 6 to 7 foot Christmas tree.
After the trees are first planted, extra care must be taken to control weeds
and assure the young seedlings are off to a good start. Mowing continues
until the trees are harvested. Beginning at
about age three, the trees are carefully shaped each summer. This
time-consuming process is called shearing. The terminal leader of each
tree is allowed to grow only about 12 to 18 inches and the lateral branches
are sheared to give the tree the desired form.
