Christmas Trees
Cassens Christmas Trees 2012 Newsletter
Our West Lafayette Christmas tree farm is located at 5038 Morehouse Road where Morehouse
Road, Taft Road, and County Road 500 North all intersect. Look for the big gray barn with the cupola and old brick house. At this farm,
you will find quality trees ranging from 5 to 14 feet tall. Available species include Canaan fir, Fraser fir, Douglas fir, White fir, Scotch pine, White pine,
Blue spruce, Norway spruce, and Serbian spruce. Fir and pine species will last from Thanksgiving through Christmas when cut from the field and well cared for indoors.
Spruce trees will last about 3 weeks, again, when cut from the field and well cared for indoors.
Our State Road 25 North tree farm is located between Americus and Delphi on County Road 1075 East and has an outstanding selection of Canaan, Fraser, and Douglas
fir trees, some up to 14 feet tall.
We individually price each tree so you know the cost before you cut or choose one of our precut trees,
which we carefully select at the right time to ensure freshness. For more information see
Tips for First-Time Buyers of Real
Christmas Trees.
Hardwood Lumber
Cassens Trees produces small quantities of hardwood lumber using a Woodmizer LT40 hydraulic portable band sawmill.
Many of the trees are obtained from forest management activities conducted on our own timber lands or from salvage.
To maintain quality, lumber is carefully handled, air dried, and finally kiln dried
to 6-8% moisture content. Specific information on lumber drying is
available in the Dry Kiln Operator's Manual, USDA Agriculture Handbook No.
188. The manual is available for $30 from the Forest Products Society
at 608-231-1361, extension 212.
As a small, part-time producer, Cassens Trees is able to supply small quantities (50 to 500 board feet) of lumber at competitive prices. We are willing
to sort for quality, widths, lengths and other factors often important to small users. We stock a limited quantity of 4/4 and 8/4 stock to 18 inches
wide. Upon request we can also produce book match boards and other highly decorative products. Custom sawing services are available.
To locate suppliers of semi-load quantities of hardwood lumber, contact the Indiana Hardwood Lumberman's Association
(IHLA) at http://www.ihla.org.
For purchase information, please email your requests to dcassens@cassenstrees.com.
Let us know species, quality level, widths, lengths, thickness and any other useful information. Knowing what the
lumber will be used for helps us to determine the quality level needed. Purchasers will be responsible for any shipping
charges. For specific questions please complete the Lumber Information
Request form.
