Cherry is a unique hardwood in that the early
colonists found it a good substitute for mahogany. The wood is medium
in hardness, light red in color when first cut, and ages to a beautiful unique
red brown color with deep luster. The grain pattern is subdued compared
to the coarser grained woods such as oak.
Cherry is a wide ranging species but, unfortunately, it is often found as
isolated trees. Under certain circumstances and in the Northeast,
it may appear in nearly pure stands. Thus, available volumes are limited
and strong demand has forced prices upward.
